A Fatal Reconciliation -Part 4
After dropping the kids off at school in the morning, she put a call through to Peter at his Lab.
"Peter, can you find out if brakes in a car have been tampered with? Would you be able to do that if all you have to work on is metal wreckage as the vehicle concerned exploded?"
There was a silent pause and Peter replied,
"What's this all about, Lynn."
"I can't tell you right now, come on, answer my question, please."
"Look, Lynn, whatever state the metal is in; I can still do tests, so yes I can find out."
She breathed in deeply. That's the only damn answer she needed.
"Thanks Peter, that's all I needed. I'll be in touch shortly."
She put the phone down and rushed out of the apartment making haste to get to Jimmy's Salvage.
The salvage yard was in an industrial area in town, and as she approached the yard, there was a sea of shiny metal and cars littered across the frosty field. She drove in and could see a tall, wiry man, middle aged, sauntering in the yard. She got out of her car and walked towards him.
He yelled out,
"What's a pretty woman like you doing here?
"I need a piece of wreckage. Are you Jimmy?
"Yes, that's me, but what for?"
The reason isn't important, Jimmy. You remember that car, a Honda Accord that was involved in a tragic accident when it collided with a tree yesterday morning."
Jimmy looked curious and stroked the grey stubble on his face,
"Sure I do; bloody car was all mangled up. It's over there by that tree."
Lynn, with a frown said,
"I want someone to come and see it this week and determine which part of it; he wants to take away. I will pay you for allowing him to do that."
Jimmy paused and replied,
"Are you police or a private dick?"
Lynn was quick in her response,
"It doesn't matter who I am. Will you help me? How much?
Jimmy with his lusty eyes on the money said,
"A hundred bucks will do it."
She handed him the cash and gave him details and the contact information for Peter and herself.
The investigation was now on, and she wore an intense smile as she left the yard.
When she got home, she called Peter and arranged to meet him in the local pub for lunch, so he would know the whole scenario. She knew that Peter loved his pint of bitter and the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding they served there. They were there several times, one time with her estranged husband and a few other times with John.
She went to her bedroom and sat on her bed with her head in her hands. She cried as she thought of this whole mess. Why was she doing this? She knew the answer; she had to find out what happened so she could protect herself and the kids. She had no bloody choice.
She heard a noise outside and when she peered through the window, she could see a strange fat man looking inside her car. A nervous tension rose within her as she thought about this man's behavior. She ran outside and confronted him.
"Who the hell are you? Why are you looking in my car?
"Sorry, I just love these beetles and was admiring your car as I want to buy one like it. Is it for sale?"
"No," she abruptly replied trying to work out whether this was a guise, and this man was really Tom's accomplice! It looked innocent enough, and the man wandered off.
She went into the pub and ordered a glass of wine while she waited for Peter. He arrived, a young man in his early thirties. He had been dating her younger sister, Mary, for the past year. She believed they were on the verge of engagement if not marriage. Peter was of medium height, somewhat stocky, wore thick glasses and his spiky hair made him look almost like a mad professor.
He was quick to ask the reasons for Lynn's strange questions as they ordered their lunch and his favorite pint of bitter. She told him everything. He sighed with a sad face,
"I am sorry about John's death. He was a nice guy. I didn't like Tom. He seemed so possessive and aggressive. Of course, I'll help you. I can pop down to Jimmy's Salvage. Jimmy actually knows me as I did some testing there on some wreckage for the police, a month ago."
Lynn was relieved as they voraciously consumed the tender slices of beef soaked in delicious gravy as the pudding melted in their mouth. The roast potatoes were perfect.
Lynn leaned towards Peter, as he shoved a big piece of the meal in his mouth, and said,
"So could you rush this? Can you get me the results tomorrow?
Peter gulped down a large dose of bitter and said,
"No, as I have to do very complicated tests at the Lab after I take some of the wreckage away, so probably by Friday you will have the results."
Good enough, she thought. They chatted for a while, and she found out that Peter's engagement to Mary had been finalized for later this year. She congratulated him, and they had a quick warm hug before they left the pub.
It was now Wednesday. She did not want to wait two days for the results, but she had no choice. She had to think of safety, and she retrieved her notes from yesterday evening. As she read it, the words hammered in her mind, "SAFETY." However, she had no results yet, which proved Tom's culpability. It was too long to wait, and she had to take appropriate measures now!
